When Mushrooms Mingle with Tea
Mushrooms in tea? It may sound surprising, but it’s a match made in herbal heaven. Our new Beneficial Blends line brings together the rich, earthy qualities of functional mushrooms like Lion’s Mane and Reishi with vibrant herbs, fruits, and teas, creating sips that are smooth, balanced, and delicious. Whether you're a wellness enthusiast or just tea-curious, this post will guide you through everything you need to know about mushroom tea, including the #1 question we get: Will I taste the mushroom?
What Is Mushroom Tea? A Quick Introduction
Mushroom tea is exactly what it sounds like, a tea made with mushrooms. But we’re not talking about the button mushrooms on your pizza. These are functional mushrooms like Lion’s Mane, Reishi and Turkey Tail, long valued for their unique properties and earthy, grounding qualities.
Unlike traditional tea, which is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant (think green, black, or oolong tea), mushroom tea is made by steeping dried or powdered mushrooms, or for us it is blending mushroom powder and extracts into our true tea bases with 100% grown tea leaves.
The result? A warm, flavorful drink that offers depth, complexity, and a new way to experience tea.
We pair these mushrooms with thoughtfully selected ingredients to create smooth, approachable blends that even first-time mushroom sippers can enjoy.
Whether you’re here for wellness, curiosity, or just something different in your cup, mushroom tea is a truly grounded experience, pun fully intended.
🌱 Why Add Mushrooms to Tea? The Power of Functional Ingredients
You’ve likely seen mushrooms showing up in everything from coffee to chocolate and now, tea. Why? What is so great about Mushrooms in tea?
The answer lies in the rise of functional ingredients, natural additions that do more than just taste good. Functional mushrooms, like Lion’s Mane, Reishi, and Turkey Tail, have been used in traditional cultures around the world for centuries. These mushrooms are valued for their unique compounds and deep connections to nature.
Blending them into tea is a natural evolution. Tea has always been a soothing, ritualistic part of daily life and combining it with the mushrooms creates a cup that’s grounding, flavorful, and intriguing.
In recent years, these mushrooms have gained attention in wellness circles for their perceived benefits in supporting balance, focus, and resilience. While we stay grounded in flavor, not claims, it’s safe to say that mushroom teas offer an experience that goes beyond the basics. More research would be needed before we can make any claims about the specific benefits of the tea but Mushrooms when enjoyed consistently is thought to have many beneficial qualities.
💡 What Is Different About Mushroom Tea?
Overall, when brewed correctly there is very little difference. The flavors have been carefully selected and blended to keep the earthiness of the mushroom perfectly balanced with the most appealing tea notes.
The brew time is longer, this softens the mushroom flavor to the perfect point. So allow for more time to brew.
If you like the earthiness of a mushroom, Reishi Chai will be the tea with the most earthy flavor but even then it will still just taste like a great cup of Chai.
🧠 Meet the Mushrooms: A Breakdown of What’s Inside
-
🦁 Lion’s Mane
Light, mild, and a little nutty in flavor, Lion’s Mane is known for its fluffy, cascading appearance that resembles a lion’s mane — hence the name. It's often appreciated for its association with focus and clarity, which is why we’ve paired it with uplifting flavors like vanilla and apple in some of our blends. This mushroom adds a gentle, grounding quality without overpowering the cup. Lion's Mane is fund in two of our blends, Lion's Vanilla Dream and Lion's Apple Crumble.
-
🍄 Reishi
Often called the “Mushroom of Immortality” in traditional cultures, Reishi has a deep, earthy richness and is commonly used for calm and restoration. Its flavor is more robust, which makes it a perfect match for bold, spiced blends like chai. We use Reishi when we want a tea to feel warm, cozy, and rooted. Reishi is found in our Reishi Chai blend.
🦃 Turkey Tail
Named for its colorful, fan-like shape that resembles a wild turkey’s tail feathers, Turkey Tail is one of the most visually striking mushrooms around. Its natural earthiness is surprisingly mild in tea, making it a great addition to blends where we want balance without overwhelming the palate. It’s long been valued in traditional practices for its versatility, and in our teas, it plays a quiet but steady role — adding depth, grounding, and a connection to the forest floor (without tasting like it). Turkey Tail is found in our Blueberry Renew blend.
🧠 Where do we source our Mushrooms?
We are thrilled to have sourced our tea not only from the USA but also from Mississippi. These gourmet mushrooms were grown in climate controlled conditions at the mushroom farm Down Home Mushrooms from Saucier, MS.
💡 The Family Connection
It is no coincidence that this collaboration between mushroom grower and tea grower came together. Timmy and Nick are brothers! Both growing up in Mississippi and both growing up to grow their own line of products.
As we sat and watched them work together to blend this new tea, Timmy's mom would tell us stories about how Timmy was the kind of kid who tormented his siblings. For those that know Timmy now, it seems odd as he is a very calm and gentle spirit. But his brother Nick will attest he wasn't like that as a kid. Our theory is all that energy is now put into the tea fields as Timmy can be found night and day working on tea during the season.
Nick, has been growing mushrooms to fill a gap in the gourmet mushroom market in his area for 4 years now. He is often found at local farmer markets selling his beautiful mushrooms. He took a leap and started blending it with some of the tea from the farm and the product was met with great reviews. This convinced Timmy it was time to share these great teas with his own customers. From there, Brother's Blend was born.
